Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike, has announced his retirement from Nigeria after five years. The 28-year old shared the sad news on his Instagram page:
“No more Eagles career! After five great years, I am happy to announce that I have put full-stop to my national team career for the sake of national peace.” “It’s a pleasure for me to have played for this great country. I never regretted it and I think it’s the best time to end it. Million thanks to all the fans who have been very supportive during the good and bad times.
“I am very proud of my performance, I am proud of my team mates and I am very proud of the nation called ‘Nigeria’. My AFCON gold medal is a sign of great achievement, My AFCON topscorer award speaks a lot about my commitment and dedication to the team. Super Eagles is a camp not a family house, and it shouldn’t be a threat zone for any individual. “I have done according to our national anthem.
“All my dreams came true in the national team, I dreamt (sic) to win Nations Cup for Nigeria after 20-years, I dreamt (sic) to played at the World Cup as well as to make a name for myself… In the space of five years, I got them. I’m a winner! “For every disappointing fans, maybe due to my inability to re-establish my goal scoring instinct for Super Eagles, I will like to say I’m sorry but the ones I had scored counted well for the team. ”
As long as Nigeria remains, you and I will always remember the name ‘Emenike’. “Finally, I am happy to make a bow and continue supporting the team every time.”
His retirement comes after sources revealed that Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh was disappointed in the player and was planning to drop him from next month’s world cup qualifying match against Swaziland. The Fenerbahçe striker scored 16 times in 35 appearances while on International duty.
Emenike Denies Converting To Islam

The Fenerbahce striker, Emmanuel Emenike is upset with his coach especially for ‘leaking’ his personal information to the media. According to the striker, he was missing on Saturday morning when others ate breakfast and when his coach asked him why he was not there to join others, he simply said he was fasting. Emenike is upset that his coach mistook his fasting for being a Muslim one and wondered why he had to give the press a wrong perception of his fast. He however disclosed to the press today that though he missed his breakfast at the club because he was fasting, what he observed was a Christian fast, and not the on-going Muslim fast. What he said;
“The report that I am now a Muslim is absolute rubbish and false. I want the source of the news to re-address it. I have no reason to convert to Islam even though I have lots of Muslim friends. Is there any big deal observing fasting during the (Muslim) fasting period?” he asked rhetorically.
“I am very disappointed seeing the news going viral because it is something I told my coach in our conversation when he asked me a question and never said I have become a Muslim. Fasting is not what everybody should know that you are doing and it’s very sad seeing this in the media.”
“I am Catholic, a strong one for that matter, and I came from Christian home. I don’t discriminate against anybody and I believe we are all equal in the presence of God, so what is the big deal in fasting? Does he know how many time I fast to get closer to God before the fasting periods? It’s really sad because I don’t see it as a big deal,” he told AfricanFootball.com.

Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike has sensationally said he is now a Muslim. According to Turkish daily Fanatik, Emenike had failed to join the squad up for breakfast on Saturday. Following Fenerbache coach Vitor Pereira’s probe into why he didn’t show up for breakfast on Saturday, Emenike replied “I’m fasting.”
But when Pereira replied: “You’re not a Muslim,” insisting that Emenike is a Christian, in response, the former Spartak Moscow player did not back down. “I became a Muslim, I am a Muslim,” he continued to claim.
