The Argentine footballer won the FIFA Ballon d’Or for a record fifth time yesterday January 11.

The Real Madrid forward is part of a three-man shortlist for the award, alongside Messi and Brazilian star Neymar, with the winner due to be announced at a ceremony in Zurich on Monday. And in what some would argue was an uncharacteristic moment of humility, he has claimed either of the Barcelona men are more likely to pick up the prestigious prize following their club's impressive year. Furthermore, Ronaldo revealed his admiration for Messi's left foot, as he expressed his delight at being part of the glamorous proceedings once again, having claimed the prize on each of the past two occasions. "If I'm here it's because I deserve it and because of the season I had, because of my individual performances," he said. "Maybe Messi or Neymar has a better chance, but I am here for a reason. Coaches and captains have voted for me. I would not be surprised if one of the others wins. I know that on a team level things are different. "I don't feel pressure to win the Ballon d'Or. I am just happy to be here again. It is an honour. I would like to have Messi's left foot. His left foot is very good." 

Three-time World Cup winner Pele believes Barcelona star Lionel Messi is a better player to Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. The 74-year old, who has ruled himself out of the FIFA President candidacy, thinks the four-time Ballon d’ Or winner is a better prospect. “It’s very difficult to make a comparison of players of different generations. But in last 10 years Messi was the best. Ronaldo plays forward and tries to score, while Messi plays with a different style,” He told a press conference. “In my team I would love to have both… We have Neymar who also has a good future.”

Lionel Messi this morning welcomed his second son with his girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo. The new born son has been named Mateo. Messi and Antonella are already parents to a son, Thiago.

UEFA has named Lionel Messi as the best player in Europe for the past season as he led Barcelona to a historic second treble. Messi was nominated alongside fellow Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez and Real Madrid rival Lionel Messi.
