Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has declared yesterday as the 1st of Dhul Hijjah 1434 AH.
By this announcement, October 15 will be the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah when Eid el-Kabir will be celebrated.
Chairman of the Sultanate Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, said in a statement  yesterday that the declaration followed the reports of various moon sighting committees across the country confirming the sighting of the new moon on Saturday which was equivalent to 29 Dhul Qidda 1434 of the Islmaic calendar.
Meanwhile, the Arafat Day, when about millions of pilgrims converge in the plains of Arafat to mark the climax of the annual Hajj, will be on October 14, the Saudi authorities announced on Saturday.
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia said in a statement following its session that a number of eyewitnesses confirmed the sighting of the crescent on Saturday (Dhul Qada 29) evening and hence Sunday (Oct. 6) will be the first day of Dhul Hijja.The first day of Eid Al-Adha (sallah) would be Tuesday October 15.The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs extends its sincere greetings and congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and wishes all Muslims progress and prosperity.
