The German football association (DFB) have today confirmed that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil is set to spend the next three months on the sidelines due to a knee injury. Having played all 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend, Özil reported to the world champions camp injured ahead of Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Poland and Republic of Ireland.
The midfielder underwent scans early on Wednesday which revealed a ”partial lateral collateral ligament tear in the left knee” according to national team doctors in Munich. As a result, the 25-year old looks set to miss the rest of the year as recovery time was put at 10-12 weeks, a news which comes as a big blow to his Premier League club Arsenal that is already without a number of first team players.
Özil joins French striker Olivier Giroud who is out till the new year as well with a foot injury, while Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta, Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey, full-backs Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal as well as English forward Theo Walcott are also out injured. He also joins a list of injured players ruled out for Germany, including captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira as well as forwards Marco Reus, Mario Gomez and Julian Draxler who has the flu.
