At least 14 passengers were burnt to death on Wednesday when a fully loaded tanker collided with a truck conveying passengers and cattle along Ogbomoso-Jebba Road. PUNCH Metro gathered that 14 other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The truck was said to be coming from a state in the North-East while the tanker was heading towards the opposite direction when the vehicles collided.
The Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mrs. Mary Wakawa, confirmed accident.
She said, “One of the heavy duty vehicles veered off its lane and collided with the other one.
“Both vehicles went up in flames. Thirteen died on the spot, while one died in the hospital. We rushed 14 injured passengers with severe burns to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Already, with the support of the Kwara State Transport Management Agency, we have evacuated the wreckage.
“Our drivers should stop long distance night travels. They need rest to avoid human errors on the roads.”
While warning against excessive speed, Wakawa advised road users to always be safety conscious.
