Jigawa senator to build N80m ICT complex for distance learningSenator Muhammad Ubali Shitu is to provide an Information Communication Technology (ICT) complex worth over N80 million in Hadejia, to boost distance-learning education in the area.
 Senator Shitu who is representing Jigawa North-East Senatorial District in Jigawa State, said at a distance education stakeholders’ sensitisation  meeting in Hadejia recently that the high cost of education through the conventional universities was denying people the opportunity to further their education, adding that distance learning mode was now a viable alternative.
A statement from the University of Abuja by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Publications) Waziri Garba said, the ICT Resource Centre, according to the senator had been provided for under his constituency project this year.
 “It would comprise the required ICT facilities for running a distance learning education programme, classrooms and laboratories tailored to meet the needs of e-learners of all age categories and callings,” he said.
 Senator Shitu who led some stakeholders, including the management of the University of Abuja on an inspection tour of facilities proposed to kick-start the programme, pledged to pay tuition fees for the first 100 people in the area that enrolled into the distance learning courses of the University of Abuja which was also a partner in the programme.
 The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Michael U. Adikwu, who was represented by Professor Sani A. Mashi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) observed that the carrying capacities of universities across the nation were not sufficient to address the yearnings of those seeking university education.
